You have, no doubt, heard "go wash your face!" at least once a day for most of your life. If you're like most of us, however, washing your face feels more like a chore that you have to do than something you should make the time to do. Even after spending years in puberty and battling against regular acne breakouts, washing your face is more of a hassle, especially when all you want to do is go to sleep! Here's the thing: you need to keep your face clean to keep dirt and bacteria from infecting your pores. Do you still want to be prone to breakouts in your thirties and onward? Here is what you need to do to keep your pores free and clear.
Your face should not have hair hanging in it.
The reason your hair should stay away from your face is that your scalp produces oil which gets transferred to your hair which can then clog your pores if your hair is in your face. If you have long hair that gets in your face or bangs that rest against your forehead for most of the day you could transfer that oil to your pores, which will then get clogged and produce pimples and acne. Having bangs or long hair is certainly appealing, but remember to keep it pulled up off of your face if you want to prevent breakouts. There are plenty of options for style and keeping your hair off of your face. Your face and skin will be so happy! If you are a fan of makeup either try to wear less of it or try to find makeup that is lighter on your skin. Many bases/foundations are now enhanced with sunscreen which means that you do not need to apply both products. You might even choose makeup that is made with minerals included so that the products help your skin instead of simply clogging it. Just because one brand costs less than the others does not mean that that is the brand you should choose. Don't cake on your makeup. You want to make "less makeup" your goal. Don't freak out, you'll still be beautiful if you cut back on the makeup that you slather on! Never go to bed with your makeup on-this is very important! Acne breakouts almost always follow a night spent sleeping in your makeup.
Take care to protect your skin against the sun's rays. For people whose goal is to keep their pores free of clogs, spreading on thick sunscreen probably seems counterintuitive. There are plenty of oil-free sunscreen alternatives out there.
