Get a new car insurance quote now
The main reason female drivers benefit from lower premiums is largely due to the fact that statistics show that women tend to make fewer and less expensive claims than male drivers. So even if the difference in the number of claims made by men and women is marginal, claims made by women tend to be for minor bumps whereas male drivers are involved in more expensive write-offs.
In addition, Government figures also show that men account for over 92 per cent of UK driving convictions and are also responsible for 98 per cent of all convictions for dangerous driving.
This means that insurers see women as a lower risk insurance group than men and so females can benefit from cheaper premiums through specialised female car insurance providers.
Saving money on your women's car insurance policy
There's no reason why any savings made on car insurance should stop at simply talking out a policy designed specifically for women and there are a number of steps lady motorists can take to get an even cheaper quote.
The type of car that you drive has a huge affect on the price of your premium so try to go for a car that has a small engine, is in a low car insurance group and has no modifications.
If your car is fitted with an approved alarm and an immobiliser then this will lower the price of your premium as will parking the car in a locked garage overnight.
Make sure that you adjust your mileage accordingly on your insurance application as, in general, the fewer miles you drive the cheaper your insurance will be.
If you are a young driver or have just passed your test then try to take out your own policy so you can build up your own no claims discount which will lead to bigger savings in the future. Similarly, it is better for older drivers to not have a younger named driver on their policy as insurance companies are putting up the prices for people that include their offspring on their insurance.
Can men benefit from cheaper car insurance for women?
Although there is no comparable type of cheaper motor insurance for men, this doesn't mean that men can't benefit from the more competitive rates offered by female only car insurance policies.
One way of doing this is to be registered as a named driver on a woman's car insurance policy as this can often be cheaper than having your own policy. This is particularly useful if you share a car with a female driver but a major downside is that you cannot accumulate any no claims discount when you are a named driver on a policy.
This can also work the other way around and men can make savings on the cost of their car insurance by simply registering a female partner as a named driver on their policy.
There are other ways that both men and women can cut the cost of their car insurance so be sure to check our money saving tips guide to see how you reduce the price of your premium.
